Our Man In Havana

How often do you get the chance to stage a 1950s espionage thriller/ romantic comedy set in Havana and starring a vacuum cleaner salesman? We leapt at the chance to deck the stage and the cast out in vibrant Cuban shades. It was a challenge to find times to rehearse, as our actors were also athletes and musicians and, dare we say it, lines were still shaky at the dress rehearsal...

It all came together for the performances though - audiences were given some laughs to sweeten the pill of Cold War paranoia, and even a couple of dance numbers. The house play opens up the stage to students who perhaps don't think of themselves as drama types, and it was refreshing to see all ages pick up the reins, on the technical and backstage sides of things as well as on stage. Merry Christmas from Havana.
