At Fettes Prep our Science Department aims to deliver a coherent and progressive science course which enables pupils to acquire a thorough knowledge and understanding of scientific concepts which affect our everyday lives and the world around them.
An enthusiasm for science
We strive to awaken and encourage each pupil’s enthusiasm and interest in science whilst developing informed attitudes about their environment.
Specialist knowledge and teaching
From M Form upwards all pupils follow a comprehensive science course combining topics based on Biology, Chemistry and Physics and are taught by dedicated teachers who have specialist knowledge in subject areas to enhance pupils learning.
Dedicated Science facilities
Most senior lessons are taught in a dedicated science laboratory housed within the Senior School Science Department, while junior classes have two state of the art mobile laboratories for use in their classrooms.
Hands on learning
A hands-on approach to learning is encouraged as much as possible with experimental work forming a key part of pupils learning. In the Second Form, pupils sit a practical examination of their experimental techniques as part of their final end of year assessment.
Investigating the world
Pupils are encouraged to take pride in their work and to develop their interests in the subject through class discussion and individual investigation. School trips to venues such as the Glasgow Science Centre and Deep Sea World help to enhance and encourage wider learning and put class-based activities into context.
