Striving for excellence and having fun is what learning music at Fettes is all about. Music is taught throughout the Prep School, each class having two lessons per cycle.

Practical learning

The curriculum is based on the strands of performing, listening and inventing with the key concepts being taught by practical means wherever possible. We also create cross curricular links where we can.

Basic skills

The recorder is taught from M Form upwards, keyboard lessons are added in T Form and pupils in Second Form learn the basic skills on acoustic and bass guitar, and drum kit.

Making music together

There are at present 25 visiting instrumental teachers and over 110 pupils learning an instrument. They come together to make music in choirs, orchestras, recorder group, salsa band and chamber groups. Piping and drumming is offered through the CCF and several Prep pupils play in the Pipe Band.

Performance opportunities

There are opportunities to perform every term, both as a soloist in the informal afternoon concerts and in the large groups at the end of each term. There are various competitions throughout the year where pupils can perform either to support their House or to compete with their peers.
