College West 1956 - 1961

Qualifications and career:
First in Civil Engineering at Trinity College, Dublin.
Chartered Engineer (MICE) in 1970.
Lots of other memberships!
Went to Hong Kong in 1970 and worked there until I retired in 2001.
President of the HK Institution of Engineers 1989.
Various jobs first as an engineer then Project Developer of a large development for a Chinese family, consultancy/ trouble shooting in China in 1980s.
From 1990 worked in HK Government quangos - Deputy Director (Head of Facilities) for the Hospital Authority 1991-1995.
Chief Executive of Trade Development Council in charge of the Convention and Exhibition Centres (included new venue for the HK Handover to China in 1997) 1996-1999.
Executive Director of new Airport Authority for final stages of its development 2000-2001.

What is your most cherished memory from your time at Fettes?
Two great CCF camps over near Oban, Mull & Jura - led by the late Joe Hills.

And your least?
CCF General's Inspection, as an assistant for DMA Howard, head of naval section, - getting his uniform ready.

What event or personality left a lasting impression on you?
Charles Whittle my form master who terrified me through my O Levels - in a kindly way.

Were you a conscientious student?
Moderately, pushed up too young. O levels when under 15.

Outside the classroom, how did you spend your free time at Fettes?
Lots of games, but not much good at rugby. Fives (captain) and Squash teams. Played cello in orchestra.
