Outdoor Pursuits
Scotland provides a great variety of outdoor opportunities. Fettes College is perfectly placed to benefit from these wonderful resources. Outdoor Pursuits has a long tradition at Fettes College and all out students have the opportunity for an adventure.
Develop personal and group skills
We have events designed to develop personal and group skills, and we do so with the help of the Outward Bound Trust and Abernethy Trust. Large numbers of our students successfully complete the expedition element in journeys that include canoes and sea kayaks, walking or cycling expeditions.
Regular events are run to support smaller groups of enthusiasts. Common events on the School Calendar are, for example;
- mountain biking in the Borders
- playboating at Grandtully Rapids
- learning winter mountain skills on Ben Lawers
Skills for expeditions
At other times, students may be learning specific skills to support them on expeditions. These have been in Scotland, and in wilder areas such as canoeing on Baffin Island and the north of Sweden, sea kayaking off Vancouver Island and climbing in the Alps.
Adventure is our aim
Adventure is what we aim to achieve, but safety is paramount. All our instructors hold the relevant National Governing Body qualifications and, when necessary, we have the advantage of being able to draw from the diverse skills of the Instructor community in Scotland.
