The aim of our department is to help our students engage in their learning and become confident in their knowledge of Mathematics. Mathematics is a fundamental life skill and we aim for all our students to feel capable of tackling known, new and different problems. We encourage all our students to take an active part in their lessons and use a variety of resources, technology and teaching techniques to support this. We expect our pupils to aim high, to reach their full potential in examinations and to enjoy the study and practice of Mathematics.

Courses and Results

All pupils at Fettes study IGCSE Mathematics in the Third, Fourth and Fifth Forms (aged 13, 14 and 15). Mathematics is an essential life skill and it is vital that all pupils leave the school with a strong set of numerical skills.

Students in the Sixth Form can choose to study A Level Mathematics, Further Mathematics A Level or the International Baccalaureate at either Higher Level, Standard Level or Mathematical Studies Standard Level.

We consistently produce excellent examination results at all levels.

Many of our students further develop their mathematical skills outside of the classroom. We have a thriving Mathematical Society which aims to broaden students’ knowledge and appreciation of the subject beyond the curriculum. In addition many students also compete in a variety of national mathematical competitions.
